Shahrukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi starrer Swades : We The People is written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The movie was released on December 17, 2004 under the banner of Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd.. Ace music director, A.R. Rehman, has given the soulful and hit music of the film. The list of the singers includes the names of Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, Alka Yagnik, Madhushree, Hariharan, Sadhna Sargam etc. Initially, Hrithik Roshan was approached to star in the lead role but after his refusal, the role was then offered to King Khan who accepted to do the role. His performance in the film earned him a Filmfare Best Actor Award. Gayatri Joshi started off her filmy career with this film.

Mohan Bhargava ( Shahrukh Khan ) is a scientist working at NASA. He plans to visit India to bring back Kaveri Amma, with whom he is deeply attached with. He wants to provide all the comforts to Kaveri Amma which she deserves. He searches for her and enters in her remote village, Charanpur. Kaveri Amma is now living with a young beautiful woman named Geeta, who is a teacher by profession. Geeta is also a childhood friend of Mohan. Geeta is running a local village school as she wants to educate all the childrens of the village.

Mohan ask Kaveri Amma to return to alongwith him. BUt Kaveri Amma introduces a strange condition that, she will go with him only when Geeta will get married and settled with someone. In order to take Kaveri Amma back, Mohan tries to help in getting Geeta married to someone. But in the process, he himself get attracted to Geeta and falls in love with her. After spending few days at the village, Mohan realizes about the several problems such as discrimination and child marriage that are rampant in the village. He also sees the poverty and other severe problems which the villagers are facing there.
