Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Hassan and Dimple Kapadia starrer Saagar is directed by Ramesh Sippy. The other starcast of the film includes Nadira and Saeed Jaffrey in supporting roles. The legend, R.D. Burman, has given the soulful music of this film. The list of the singers used in the film includes the names of Shailendra Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangehskar etc. This movie bring back the hot pair of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple who were first seen together in the hit film Bobby. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in the movie. However, Dimple faced a huge controversy after the release of the movie over her topless shot in the film.

Mona D’Silva ( Dimple Kapadia ) is a tavern owner’s beautiful daughter. Her childhood friend, Raja( Kamal Hassan ) has always loved Mona, but never lets her know about his feeling for her. He always dreams of having a beautiful future with her. Ravi ( Rishi Kapoor ), is a grandson of Kamla Devi and belongs to a very rich family. Ravi comes to live with his grandmother. He sees Mona and falls in love with her. Ravi also becomes a good friend of Raja.

But Ravi’s grandmother is not happy with his closeness with Mona and the villagers. When raja comes to know about Ravi and Mona affair he gest devasted by this but does not tell anyone. But when Kamla Devi finds out that Ravi and Mona are having an affair, she instructs him to get married to someone who has equal status to them. However, Ravi refuses to obey her saying. Then Kamal Devi puts pressure on Mona and ask her to marry someone else. Mona, in order to save the village from the devastation, agrees to marry Raja.
