Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik starred movie ‘Taxi Driver’ is a romantic movie which was directed by Chetan Anand. The movie was released in 1954 under the banner of Navketan International Films. Other starcast included Sheila Ramani, Johnny Walker, Rashid Khan, Parveen Kaul, Ratan Gaurang, Hameed and Vernon Corke in important supporting roles. The story of the movie was written by Uma Anand whereas screenplay and dialogues of the movie were given by Vijay Anand. Famous music director Sachin Dev Burman has given the music in the movie and the list of playback singers included Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar. Movie starts in Bombay of 1960s with it’s quiet, peaceful and scenic background and trams. There is an unique taxi driver named Mangal or Hero (Dev Anand). The name Hero is given to him by his friends. He generally drives a cab in the day, drinks at night and goes to listen the songs from his girlfriend named Sylvie (Sheila Ramani) who is a singer. He then goes into a drunken stupor and wakes up in the next morning with a hangover. That is the routine of him which he follows everyday. One day Hero while assisting another taxi driver, comes to the help of a beautiful lady named Mala (Kalpana Kartik) who is being molested by two thugs. He rescues her from those two goons and also offers her to take her to her destination which she accepts.

Mangal takes her to the destination but all goes in vain as the person has moved for which she is looking for. The very next day Mangal and Mala once again try to seek that person who is none other than a music director named Ratanlal. They roam around all the day but do not succeed. Mala lives in Mangal’s small house where she start feeling an attachment with him. Both become attracted to each other and fall in love. Soon Mala comes to know about his girlfriend and she leaves him. Mangal goes everywhere in search of her and finds that she has become a famous singer with the help of her music director who is actually her friend.
