Tanuja Samarth is a popular bollywood actress who is popularly known as Tanuja in the industry. She was born on 23rd September, 1943 at Mumbai, Maharashtra. She was daughter of Kumarsen Samarth who was a poet and his wife Shobhna Samarth who was a famous 1930s and 1940s actress. She was born as Tanuja Samarth into a Marathi family of four children. Her parents were seperated when she was very young. She is married to Shomu Mukherjee and have two children Kajol Mukherjee who was born in 1975 and Tanisha Mukherjee who was born in 1978. Her husband Shomu Mukherjee died of cardiac arrest on 10th April, 2008. Tanuja entered in the movies when she was young and acted as child artist in the movies.

Tanuja started her career in the movie Hamari Beti in 1950 with her elder sister Nutan. She started as Baby Tanuja in the industry. She got a leading role after ten years in the movie Chhabili in 1960 which was his debute movie as a leading actress. This movie was directed by her mother. Her film career kept running through 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and she gave many hit movies during that period. She starred in the movie Haathi Mere Saathi in 1971 opposite superstar Rajesh Khanna which became a superhit movie and went to do a good business at the box office. Then she acted in Mere jeevan Saathi, Do Chor and Ek Baar Muskara Do (1972). Some of the other films she has acted in are Pavitra Paapi, Bhoot Bangla, Anubhav, Jeene Ki Raah, etc.

Tanuja retired from the industry for a number of years and made her come back with supporting roles often starring former heroes. She also played supporting role in the movie ‘Prem Rog’ directed by Raj Kapoor in 1982. She has recently appeared in such films as Saathiya (2002), Rules (2003), and Khakee (2003) as a supporting actress. Apart from hindi cinema she was also active in parallel cinema in Bengali movies in Kolkata starting with the film Deya Neya (1963) where she was paired opposite the stalwart of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar.Tanuja had fantastic on-screen chemistry with the superstar Soumitra Chatterjee with whom she made some huge box office hits like Teen Bhuvaner Parey (1969), Prothom Kadam Phool etc.
