Shammi Kapoor is a very famous bollywood actor who was born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor on 21st October, 1931 at Bombay (Mumbai), Maharashtra. He is son of great Prithviraj Kapoor and brother of the legend Raj Kapoor who is also called father of Indian Cinema and Shashi Kapoor. All of them were successful actors, like their father. He was married to actress Geeta Bali and have two children. His first wife died of small pox in 1966 and he married again with Neela in 1969. His career ended as a romantic hero due to his significant weight gain in early 1970s. The majority of his successful movies were made in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Shammi Kapoor had started his career with serious roles. He worked with established heroines like Madhubala in Rail Ka Dibba, directed in 1953. But his image changed to a light hearted playboy when he starred in the movies ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha‘ directed by Filmistan’s Nasir Hussain in 1957 and ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ in 1959. He starred opposite Ameeta and Asha Parekh respectively in both the movies. He starred in the movie ‘Junglee’ in 1961 and that created a new image of Shammi Kapoor. The movie was a huge hit and the song “Chahe Koi Mujhe Janglee Kahe” also helped in creating his naughty image on the silverscreen. He particularly chose Mohammed Rafi for the songs on which he had to acted. Many producers and directors paired new heroines with Shammi Kapoor.

Three heroines Sharmila Tagore, Saira Banu and Asha Parekh became huge stars working with him. He starred with Asha Parekh in four films and the most successful being Teesri Manzil in 1966 which was a murder mystery. He has won Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Brahmachari in 1968 co-starred with actress Mumtaz. His last hit was in 1971 movie Andaz from which he switched to supporting roles. He played the role of Saira Banu’s father in Zameer in 1975. He was also successful in supporting roles. Some of his movies in 1970s are Andaz, Manoranjan (1974), Zameer, Bandalbaaz (1976) which were not able to gain success. He has won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in Vidhaata in 1982. He also got the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
