Sachin Dev Burman also know as Burman da was a famous composer and singer who was born on 1st October, 1906 at Comilla, Bangladesh. He was son of Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman who was a sitarist and Dhrupad singer and Nirmala Devi. Sachin was the youngest of the five sons, of his parents, who had nine children in all. sachin Dev had started his training in classical music under his father. He was graduated in Bachelor of Arts from Calcutta University. He had started his formal music training under K.C. Dey who was a famous musician from 1925 to 1930. Then he came under Bhismadev Chattopadhaya, Kahifa Badal Khan and Ustad Allauddin Khan.

S.D Burman had composed music for hundred movies inclusive of Bengali films. He had sung in about twenty movies whose songs became hit. He started working as a radio singer on Calcutta Radio Station in 1932. His first record was also released with “Khamaj” semi classical. He reached his peak as a singer and also sang for composers like Himangsu Dutta, RC Boral, Nazrul Islam and Sailesh Das Gupta. He was awarded a golden medal at Bengal Music Conference, Kolkata where he sang his thumri. Later he moved to Bombay (Mumbai) in 1944 at the request of Sasadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan. He was invited there to give score for two movies of Ashok Kumar starrer Shikari in 1946 and Aath Din. His first major breakthrough came the following year with Do Bhai in 1947.

S D Burman teamed up with Dev Anand’s Nav Ketan Productions in 1950s and gave musical hits like Taxi Driver (1954), Munimji (1955), Paying Guest (1957), Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and Kalapani (1958). Some of the movies inwhich he sang are Guide, Aath Din, Prem Pujari, Sujata, Bandini etc. His song “Allaah Megh De” from the movie Guide was a sensation and became a hit. He had also sung “Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar” in the movie Bandini which was also liked and appreciated by critcs. Not only this, his style of singing was unique and had a soft touch. He also wrote music for the Guru Dutt classics - Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and the soundtrack of Devdas was also composed by him. He had a son named Rahul Dev Burman who also became a successful singer and composer like him.
