Sanjeev Kumar and Kumkum starred movie ‘Raja Aur Runk’ is a family drama movie which was directed by Kotayya Pratyagatma. The movie was released in 1968 under the banner of Prasad Productions Pvt. Ltd. Other starcast included Ajit, Mukri, Mohan Choti, Kamal Kapoor, Mahesh Kothare, Nirupa Roy, Nazima, Aruna Rai, Bipin Gupta, Badri Prasad, Babbanlal Yadav, Tyagraj, Badri Prasad etc in supprting roles. The movie was produced by L.V. Prasad whereas the screenplay was written by R.V. Sastri and Kotayya Pratyagatma. Dialogues of the movie were written by Mukhram Sharma and famous duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal gave the music in the movie. Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi sang the songs. Hit songs of the movie are listed below:

Movie starts with Raja who lives a poor lifestyle in his palatial house alongwith his mother named Shanta (Nirupa Roy), a sister named Sujata (Nazima) who is also called Sujju, and his father named Hariram (Ajit) who is also called Haria. Haria is an alcoholic and gambler person who abuses Raja as well as his whole family. He abuses him physically and verbally and also forces him to beg so that Haria can fulfil his needs through his earnings. His sister Sujju sells toys mainly ‘Firkies’ and earns something for her and her family’s living.

But Hariram forces her to give him all the money so that he can play gamble. Here Shanta and Sujata encourage Raja for education and to attend the local school. He also gets the admission but when Haria comes to know about his school going, he tears up his school-books and threatens him not to go to school. Raja likes to play with his friends and he always pretend to be the king which his father does not like in anyway and he beats him up. Very soon his mother and sister find out that Raja has lost his mind and really believes he is a king. He also refuses to listen and obey his elders.
