Ranbirraj Kapoor or Raj Kapoor was a very famous legendary bollywood actor, producer and director who was born on 14th December, 1924 at Peshawar (now in Pakistan). He was also called ‘The Show Man’ in the industry. He is son of great Prithviraj Kapoor who was also an actor and Rama Kapoor. He was the eldest child in four children family. He has two younger brothers - Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor and a sister by name Urmila Sial. He married Krishna Malhotra who was from Jabalpur, in 1946 when he was 22 years of age. He has five children in which Randhir Kapoor (born in 1947)is eldest followed by a daughter Ritu (1948), Rishi Kapoor (1952), Reema (1956) and Rajiv Kapoor (1962). Raj Kapoor is appreciated both by film critics and ordinary film fans.

Raj Kapoor started his career in the movie Inquilab in 1935 at the age of 11. He acted in several other movies for next 12 years. His big break movie Neel Kamal came in 1947 in which he starred opposite famous actress Madhubala in her first role as a leading lady. He started his own studio by name R.K. Films. His first movie as a producer, director and actor was the 1948 movie Aag. He worked with actress Nargis in that movie. His first major success as an actor was classic blockbuster Andaz directed by Mehboob Khan in 1949. He worked in many box office hits like Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1956) and Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960). He starred, produced and directed the movie Sangam in 1964 which was his first film in colour.

Now, he moved to the field of direction in his next movie ‘Mera Naam Joker’ in 1970. This movie was not successful at the box office and created a lot of problems to him. He bounced back with the movie Kal Aaj Aur Kal in 1971 in which he shared the screen with his eldest son Randhir Kapoor. He launched his second son Rishi Kapoor with Dimple Kapadia in Bobby directed by himself in 1973. In late 1970s and early 1980s he produced and directed movies based on women power like Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) with Zeenat Aman, Prem Rog (1982) with Padmini Kolhapure and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) which introduced Mandakini. His last appearance was in Balika Badhu in 1982. Raj Kapoor was suffering from Asthma in his last years and died of complications of asthma in 2nd June, 1988.
