Raaj Kumar was a famous bollywood actor who was born on 8th October, 1926 at Balochistan which is now in Pakistan. He was born as Kulbhushan Pandit and was a Kashmiri Hindu - Saraswat Brahmin. He was married to Gayatri in the 1960s and has three children named Puru Raajkumar who is also an actor in the bollywood, a daughter Vastavikta and Panini. He moved to Mumbai in the late 1940s and started out as sub-inspector of Mumbai Police. He turned to acting with the unnoticed movie named Rangili in 1952. He has starred in over seventy movies in his career of four decades. He was known for his special style of dialogue delivery and for having a gravelly voice which made him an icon in the industry.

Raaj Kumar quithis job as a police inspector and turned to acting in early 1950s. He changed his name to Raaj Kumar. He made his acting debut in the movie Rangili in 1952 which was unnoticed. He then tried for more five years in some movies but was unable to launch his career. Then he starred in the movie Mother India directed by Mehboob Khan in 1957 which was a classic Oscar-nominated blockbuster movie. He worked with Sunil Dutt, Nargis and Rajendra Kumar in the movie. His performance in the film as a poor farmer who loses his arms in an accident and then abandons his wife was widely appreciated. After that he went on to play many leading roles in the 1960s and 1970s with many successful actresses.

His most notable performances were in hit films like Paigham (1959), Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960), Gharana (1961), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Neel Kamal (1968), Pakeezah (1972), Lal Patthar (1971), Heer Ranjha (1971), and Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973). He also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Awards for Dil Ek Mandir and Waqt. At that time he was at the peak of his career. He appeared in lesser films and often played central supporting or villain roles during late 1970s and 1980s. He also appeared alongside legendary actor Dilip Kumar in the movie Saudagar in 1991. This was the first time both these actors acted on the screen in last three decades. They last appeared together in Paigham (1959). He died on 3rd July, 1996 due to a throat disease.
