Songs of Parakh


Sadhana Shivdasani, Nasir Hussain and Rashid Khan starred movie ‘Parakh’ is a comedy drama movie which was produced and directed by Bimal Roy. The movie was released on 5th August, 1960 under the banner of Bimal Roy Productions. Other starcast included Durga Khote, Sheela Rao, Praveen Paul, Mumtaz Begum, Sarita Devi, Mehar Banu, Vasant Choudhury, Kanhaiyalal, Asit Sen etc in important supporting roles. The story and dialogues of the movie were written by Salil Choudhury and Shailendra respectively. The music of the movie was scored by Salil Choudhury and Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar sang the songs of the movie. Hit songs of the movie are listed below:

Movie starts with Niravan (Nazir Hussain) who is a post master in a village. One day while working, he receives an envelope with a cheque which contains a large amount of money. Some instructions are also written on the envelope that he is to turn this cheque over to the most honest man in the village. Therefore Niravan calls a village meeting and informs them about this envelope and the conditions provided. Then it is decided that there are only five people who are honest but according to the conditions only one can get the said amount. Therefore they decide to hold elections in the village so that everyone can decide who is the most honest man in the village.

The elections are held soon and at the result time a hilarious outcome comes as all the five prominent people bend over backwards. The village doctor starts treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay him whereas the money-lender starts forgiving loans. The Zamindar of the village becomes kind hearted and he allows everyone to drink water from his property and the village priest allows the untouchables to worship in the temple. The whole scenario of the village changes but these people are not to be trusted. The only man who can be trusted is Niravan who also needs money for his daughter named Seema’s (Sadhana Shivdasani) marriage.
