Mehmood Ali was an actor, director and producer and simply known as Mehmood in the bollywood. He was born on 29th September, 1932 at Bombay (Mumbai), Maharashtra. His mother was an actor and dancer whose name was Mumtaz Ali and had eight children. He was one of eight children having an elder sister and rest of the children were younger than him. He has a son named Lucky Ali who is a singer of Bollywood and has also acted in films like Sur and superhit movie Kaante in 2002. Mehmood has a sister named Minoo Mumtaz who was also an actress. He was married to Madhu who was sister of famous actress Meena Kumari. He was known and appreciated for playing comic roles in Hindi movies.

Mehmood started his film career as a child actor in the movie Kismet which was a film by Bombay Talkies. He worked as director P L Santoshi’s driver and driving, doing odd jobs, selling poultry were his other works. He was hired to teach table tennis to Meena Kumari in those days. He was first offered a small role in the movie CID in 1956 where he played the role as a murder victim. Then he acted in some more movies like ‘Do Bigha Zameen‘ and ‘Pyaasa’. He got his first major break in the movie Parvarish in 1958. His comic talent was recognized in the industry after performing in that movie. He was then offered some more matured roles in his next movies such as Gumnam, Pyar Kiye Jaa and Pyar Hi Pyar. He was the lead comedian opposite Shobha Khote in the movie Sasural.
His pair with Shobha Khote was quite successful, which was repeated in hits like Love in Tokyo and Ziddi. He started his company in the early 1960s which produced the movie Chhote Nawab in 1961. Apart his acting, he was also involved in directing the movies. Mehmood’s directorial debut was in the movie Bhoot Bangla (1965) which was a suspense comedy thriller. One of the most successful movies of his company was Padosan in 1968 in which he also acted as Master Pillai who teaches music to Bindu (Saira Banu). Some of his superhit movies are Love in Tokyo (1966), Bombay to Goa, Humjoli (1970), Kunwaara Baap (1974), Sabse Bada Rupaiya (1976), Dil Tera Diwana (1962) and Patthar ke Sanam (1967). He was awarded the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award for Dil Tera Deewana. This veteran comedian of Bollywood passed away on 23rd July, 2004 in Pennsylvania, USA.
