Madhushree is a singer who sings in hindi, tamil and telugu language movies. She was born as Sujata Bhattacharya in a Bengali brahmin family in Kolkata. She is the daughter of Amarendranath Bhattacharya and Parbati Bhattacharya. Her parents acted as her initial teachers. She was taught classical music by Saneetacharya Pt. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay who was a noted exponent of the Bishnupur Gharana and excelled in Thumri and Khayal. She started working for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations later and was deputed to teach classical music in Surinam. She joined the Rabindra Bharathi University and completed her masters in classical singing. She is married to an engineer and music director Robby Badal.

Madhushree made her playback singing debut with the movie ‘Moksha’ on the recommendation of another successful playback singer Kumar Sanu. She has then gone on to sing songs in the movies such as Yuva (2004), Aayitha Ezhuthu, Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Anbe Aaruyire and Kuch Naa Kaho (2003) and her most recent albums include A.R. Rahman’s Guru (2007) and Rang De Basanti (2006), Srikanth Deva’s Aalwar, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Deepavali and Harris Jayaraj’s Unnale Unnale. Her song Vaaji Vaaji in A.R. Rahman’s Sivaji was well received. She sang three songs “Naa Shiqwa Hota”, “Mujpe Toofan Uthaye” and “Sabaq Aisa Padha Diya Tune” in A.R. Rahman’s Tehzeeb for which she has been credited as Sujata Bhattacharya. But these songs were not became popular.

The song “In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein” was sang by Madhushree in the movie ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ in which A.R. Rehman was the music director. The song became a successful one. As she hailed from a Bengali background, Madhushree sang Tamil and Telegu songs for many South Indian composers. Her voice became an instant hit, especially under the discography of A.R. Rahman. Some of her successful albums are Aye Na Balam, Babul Mora, Barsan Lagi and Piya Lagi Laganiya. She has learnt Tamil language to give her best and concentrate with more passion towards her work. She has also sung in the movies including Saathiya (2002), Swades (2004), Kisna (2005), Paheli (2005) and Mangal Pandey (2005).
