Rajesh Khanna, Vidya Sinha and Shabana Azmi starred movie ‘Karm’ is a family drama which was produced and directed by B.R. Chopra. The movie was released in 1977 under the banner of B.R. Films. Other starcast included Asrani, Kumari Naaz, Iftekhar, Prema Narayan, Achala Sachdev, Om Shivpuri, Jankidas, Manmohan Krishna, Jagdish Raj etc in significant roles. The story of the movie was written by Gajendra Kumar Mitra whereas the music was given by famous Rahul Dev Burman. Movie starts with Shyamlal Kumar (Iftekhar) who is a retired judge. He lives a wealthy lifestyle alongwith his wife and only son named Arvind (Rajesh Khanna). Arvind is now studying law and is on his way to become a lawyer and later judge like his father. One day Arvind meets with a gorgeous lady named Asha Shastri (Vidya Sinha) and soon both of them fall in love with each other. They would like to get married and therefore Asha arranges a meeting of Arvind with her father named Chintamani Shashtri (Manmohan Krishna) who instantly approves him. Here Shyamlal and his wife give their blessings and approval to Asha.

Later Chintamani comes to see the dark future ahead of this couple, he withdraws his blessings from Arvind. The chances of the prediction become more as his predictions always prove to be accurate. After listening this Arvind’s parents become very angry and ask Arvind to marry someone else. But both of them cannot live without each other and they start living with each other without marriage. But this way of living is not permitted in the society and they are blacklisted. Soon Asha becomes pregnant without knowing that Arvind has met a lovely young woman named Neelam Shukla (Shabana Azmi).
