Rajendra Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Nanda and Mehmood starred movie ‘Kanoon’ is a mysterious and thriller movie which was directed by B.R. Chopra. The movie was released in 1960 and other starcast included Nana Palsikar, Manmohan Krishna, Shashikala, Jeevan, Shubha Khote, Moolchand and Jagdish Raj in significant roles. The movie was produced by Anano, B.R. Chopra and Sarup Singh. The story of the movie was written by C.J. Pavri whereas the evergreen music of the movie was given by Salil Choudhury. movie starts with Kalidas (Jeevan) who is a killer and is arrested by the police as he has murdered somebody. He is presented in the court of Judge Badri Prasad (Ashok Kumar) where he pleads for his guilty and informs the court that he has already been convicted of the same crime ten years ago when the courts sentenced him for killing the very same man who has died at his hands recently. But Judge announces an erroneous decision for the crime which he did not commit. Later Justices Badri Prasad and Jha continue their discussion after the hearing and both of them get in a bet that one of them could get away with murder. Unfortunately after their bet a money-lender named Dhaniram gets killed and the police arrests a man named Kaalia (Nana Palsikar).

Later in the court Kaalia tells that he went to Dhaniram to rob him where he found him dead. Then Advocate Kailash Khanna (Rajendra Kumar) comes up in favour of Kaalia and enters a plea of not guilty on his behalf. Kailash Khanna is the prospective son-in-law of Judge Prasad because he is in love with Meena (Nanda) who is Badri Prasad’s daughter. During the hearing Kailash closely observes the Judge whereas the publc prosecutor goes on lay evidence upon evidence to prove that kaalia is the real culprit. When Kailash’s turn comes up he requested to grant him the time of five minutes after that he will declare the accused name. After five minutes he points his finger towards Judge Prasad. Prasad steps down and lets Jha take over the proceedings.
