Yusuf Khan popularly known as Dilip Kumar is a legendary famous bollywood actor and a former Member of Parliament who was born on 11th December, 1922 at Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar (now in Pakistan). Yusuf Khan was born in a Hindko-speaking Peshawari family of twelve children. He is son of Ghulam Sarwar who was a fruit merchant and owned large orchards in Peshawar and Deolali in Maharashtra near Nashik. His family moved to Mumbai in 1930s and he moved to Pune in early 1940s to start canteen business and supplying dry fruits.He married actress and “beauty queen” Saira Banu in 1966 whe she was just 22 years of age. His younger brother Nasir Khan was also an actor and acted opposite him in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976) but his career was not so successful. He died in 1974 and his wife Begum Para recently appeared in Saawariya (2007).

He started his career in 1944 with the movie Jwar Bhata which went unnoticed but in 1947 he gave a suprhit movie Jugnu. Then he acted in romantic melodrama film Andaz in 1949 with superstar Raj Kapoor. Throughout the 1950s he was one of the biggest stars of Bollywood along with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. He became popular in playing tragic roles which earned him the title of “tragedy king”. His movie Devdas in 1955 became a major hit and took him to the new hights. He starred in the historical film Mughal-e-Azam in 1960 in which he plyed the role of Jehangir, son of Akbar. In 1961 he produced and starred in the hit Ganga Jamuna in which he and his real-life brother Nasir Khan played the title roles but despite the film’s success he did not produce any film.

Roles for Dilip Kumar dried up in 1970s as Amitabh Bachchan was hit at that time. He returned with a strong character in the blockbuster movie Kranti in 1981. Also he played center roles in the hit movies like Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His last movie was Quila in 1998 and he retired from the industry since then. He has won 8 filmfare best actor award and received filmfare lifetime achievement award in 1992. He was also honoured with dada saheb phalke award in 1994 by the government of India. This underlines his vast contribution to Indian Cinema. He has been a member of the upper house of Parliament since 2000 and is known for his extensive charity work.
