Songs of Devika Rani

Devika Rani Chaudhary Roerich was a very famous bollywood actress of 1930s and 1940s. She was popularly known as Devika Rani in the film industry. She was born on 30th March, 1908 at Waltair (now Visakhapatnam), Andhra Pradesh. She was the great grand-niece of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. She was the daughter of Col. M.N. Chaudhuri who was the first Indian Surgeon-General of Madras and Leela. She completed her early studies in early 1920s and then studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK. There she won scholarships. Devika Rani was married to Himanshu Rai who was the producer and actor in 1929.

Devika Rani has played the role of Maharani in the movie ‘Karma’ which was directed by J.L. Freer-Hunt in 1933 opposite her husband Himanshu Rai, Abraham Sofaer and Sudharani. She is also accredited for having acted in the longest kissing scene in the movie world with her husbandShe soon moved to Bombay Talkies film studio where other famous actors later worked such as Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. Her most notable movie was ‘Achoot Kanya’ which was directed by Franz Osten in 1936 where she played the role of Kasturi opposite Ashok Kumar alongwith P.F. Pithawala, Kamta Prasad, Kishori Lal and Kusum Kumari. The song “Main Ban Ki Chidiya” in the movie which was picturised on her became the superhit song of that time.

She became the leading actress in 1930s. Her husband died in 1940 and she fought for control of her husband’s studio Bombay Talkies. But she had to share control with Sashadhar Mukherjee. Later in 1943, Sashadhar, Ashok Kumar and a lot of Bombay talkies veterans left and formed a new studio named Filmistan. After the formation of Filmistan, Bombay Talkies started to fade. Her career as an actress became in downfall and she was replaced by another superhit actress Leela Chitnis. Then Devika left movies and married Svetoslav Roerich who was a Russian painter in 1945. She was awarded Padma Shri by the president of India in 1958 and also became the first recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is a prestigious film prize. She died on 9th March, 1994.
