Songs of Chhaya


Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh starred bollywood movie ‘Chhaya’ is a romantic movie which is full of music. The movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and it was released in 1961 under the banner of A.V.M. Productions. Other starcast included Nirupa Roy, Nasir Hussain, Lalita Pawar, Achala Sachdev, Bharati Roy, Mohan Choti, Krishan Dhawan, Asit Sen, Baby Farida, Mohan Choti etc in significant supporting roles. The movie was produced by A.V. Meiyappan whereas the story was written by D.N. Mukherjee. The screenplay and dialogues of the movie were written by Sachin Bhowmick and Rajendra Krishan respectively. Famous Salil Chowdhury gave the music in the movie and the songs were crooned by Talat Mahmood, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar etc. Hit songs of the movie are listed below:

Movie starts with Sarita Choudhary (Asha Parekh) who lives a wealthy lifestyle in her palatial house alongwith her father named Jagatnarayan Choudhary (Nasir Hussain) who is a widower. There also lives her aunt named Rukmani (Lalita Pawar) alongwith her cousin named Lalli (Mohan Choti) and a maid-servant named Manorama Lal (Nirupa Roy). Her father is very serious for her studies and when she needs a tutor who can make her perfect in essay writing, he quickly appoints Arun (Sunil Dutt) who is a young and handsome man. Soon both of them fall in love with each other especially when Sarita comes to know that Arun is none other than the famous poet by the name of Rahee.

When her aunt comes to know about their affair, she gets very annoyed as she wants her to marry with her her nephew named Ramu alias Romeo (Ashim Kumar). Here Jagatnarayan also wants his daughter to marry with Moti Lal who comes from a very wealthy family. When he comes to know about Sarita and Arun, he openly rejects any alliance with him as Arun is from a poor background. Later Moti Lal gets an anonymous letter informing him that Sarita is not the real daughter of Jagatnarayan and her parentage, religion and caste are unknown.
