Alokesh Lahiri who is a famous singer and composer was generally known as Bappi Lahiri in the music industry. He was born on 27th November, 1952 at Calcutta (Kolkata), West Bengal. He was born in a family which was traditionally rich in classical music. He is son of Aparesh Lahiri and Bashabi Lahiri. His father Aparesh Lahiri was a famous Bengali singer and his mother was a musician and a singer who was well-versed in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He is married to Chitrani and have two children - daughter Rema Lahiri and son Bappa Lahiri. He started playing tabla at the age of three. He always wanted to be famous from very small age. He started the trend of using disco music in India.

Bappi Lahiri made his debut in singing in a Bengali film named Daadu in 1972. He was just nineteen years of age at that time. He entered in the bollywood at the same age and composed music for the first time for Nanha Shikari in 1973. The music was critically accepted. He composed the music for Zakhmee which was directed by Tahir Husain in 1975 and also sang the songs in the movie. This proved to be a turning point in his career. He sang the duet song “Nothing is Impossible” with legendary Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar for the same movie. Then the songs of his next movie Chalte Chalte were not liked so much by the audience. His singing and music became more popular with the movie Surakshaa, directed by Ravikant Nagaich.
Not only this he has given music to the movies produced from South India. In 1990s, he almost disappeared from the bollywood but later came back in Dalal produced by Prakash Mehra. The song “Gutur Gutur” in the movie was supposed to be a hit. In 2000s he scored music for many movies and has done playback singing. He sang for famous duo Vishal-Shekhar for the movie Taxi Number 9211. He sang “Bambai Nagariya” in the movie and the song became a superhit. Once again he gave his voice to the title track of Maniratnam’s movie Guru. He has appeared on a popular television show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs’ on Zee TV co-judged with Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet. He also provided music for the hit movie sarkar raj »”>Sarkar Raj.
