Songs of Bairaag


Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu starred movie ‘Bairaag’ is a family drama movie which was directed by Asit Sen. The movie was released in 1976 under the banner of M.R. Productions and other starcast included Leena Chandavarkar, Prem Chopra, Sujit Kumar, Madan Puri, Nasir Hussain, Ruma Guha Thakurta, Praveen Paul, Asit Sen and Helen in important roles. The movie was produced by Mushir Alam and Mohammad Riaz whereas the story of the movie was written by S. Khalil. The dialogues were written by Abrar Alvi and Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza and music was directed by famous duo Kalyanji-Anandji. The list of playback singers included Asha Bhosle, Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. Hit songs of the movie are listed below:

1. Main Bairaagi

Movie starts with Thakur Chandrabhan who lives a wealthy lifestyle in his palatial home in a small village. He is a widower who lives with his sister, his daughter-in-law named Saraswati (Purnima) and a grand daughter named Tara (Saira Banu). His grand daughter now becomes of the marriageable age. There is another character named Bholanath (Dilip Kumar) who also lives in this household. But he is blind since birth and helps with household chores. Soon Tara’s marriage is arranged with a handsome groom named Pratap Singh (Prem Chopra). He comes from a noble family of equally wealthy family. He approves of Tara but he demands a dowry of rupees three lakhs. Chandrabhan does not have this much money but Bholanath decides to help him and he stashes away cash from the snake who was guarding the money.

He offers the money to Pratap who accepts the money and goes off. Bhola does not pursue him but is instead bitten by the snake. This helps him in regaining his eyes. Later he decides to go to Bombay to locate Pratap. After several days later he returns to the home and there he is informed that he must marry Tara as she refuses to marry anyone else. After sometime Tara notice a change in Bhola that he calls her Tara instead of Little Mistress as he usually calls her. However the family decides to engage them and at the engagement ceremony the police comes with the arrest warrent of Bhola. On later enquiry it is opened that the warrent is for theft and murder of a young woman named Lucy (Helen).
