Akshaye Khanna made his bollywood debut in the year 1997 with the movie ‘Himalaya Putra’ which was his father’s production and directed by Pankaj Parashar. He acted with his father alongwith Hema Malini and Anjala Zaveri in the movie. The movie didn’t get the success at the box office. Then he next starred in the superhit movie ‘Border‘ directed by J.P Dutta in 1997 where he acted as Dharamvir who is a soldier. The movie became the highest grossing film of that year. He has also won the Filmfare Best Debut Award for this movie. But his next coming movies were unable to do well at the box office including Mohabbat (1997), Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1998), Kudrat (1998), Love You Hamesha (1999), Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and Laawaris (1999).

Then he starred in superhit movie ‘Taal’ directed by Subhash Ghai in 1999 where he played as Manav Mehta. He starred opposite Aishwarya Rai alongwith Anil Kapoor in the movie.
