A.R. Rahman is one of the famous film composer, record producer, musician and singer in the bollywood as well as overseas. He was born on 6th January, 1967 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was born in a musically affluent Tamil family of R.K. Shekhar who was a Chennai based composer and conductor for Malayalam movies. He lost his father at a very small age and the musical equipments were rented out by his family for some income. He is married to Saira Banu and has three children named Khadijah, Rahima and Aameen. He is the founder of the Chennai-based rock group named ‘Nemesis Avenue’. He began early training in music under Master Dhanraj. He graduated with a degree in Western classical music from the Trinity College of Music.

A.R. Rahman has started his music recording and mixing studio which was attached to the backyard of his house and he named it ‘Panchathan Record Inn’. He initially composed music jingles for advertisements, Indian Television channels and music scores in documentaries. He first composed the score and soundtrack for the Tamil movie ‘Roja’ which was directed by Mani Ratnam in 1992. He has also received the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards. He made his debut in the Hindi-language films through the movie ‘Rangeela’ directed by Ram Gopal Varma in 1995. He has given many successful scores to the movies such as Dil Se (1998), Taal (1999), Swades (2004) and Rang De Basanti (2006).

He has also done the playback singing in the bollywood. His songs “Dil Se Re” from the movie Dil Se became a superhit which was picturised on Shahrukh Khan. Also he has given his voice to many hit songs such as “Chale Chalo” in Lagaan, “Mustafa Mustafa” in Mustafa, “Piya Haji Ali” in Fiza and “Mere Yaar Mila De” in Sathiya. He has received the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for contributions to music. Also he was awarded the Padma Shri from the Government of India and won four times the National Film Award. He recently added the oscar awards to his tally for the Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song. He was appointed as the Global Ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership which was a project by WHO.
