Vyjayanthimala Bali is a major and famous actress of bollywood in 1950s and 1960s who was born on 13th August, 1936 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She did her schooling at Sacred Heart Church Park Convent, Chennai. She is trained in Bharatnatyam which is a South Indian genre of classical dancing. She is a bollywood actress though her mother tongue is Tamil. Vyjayanthimala is married to Dr. Chamanlal Bali and has a son named Suchindra Bali. She left her acting career after the marriage and moved to Chennai with her husband. She entered politics later as a member of Lok Sabha and then nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha.

She got a break in an AVM which is a production house, Tamil movie named Vazhkai produced by M.V. Raman who was a family friend. She was only fifteen years of age at that time. The movie was successful and was remade in Hindi in the year 1951 titled as Bahaar. She acted in a few more Tamil movies before moving to bollywood. She got her initial bollywood movie roles in the movies Ladki and Nagin in 1954. The movie Nagin became an enormous success which included the music of Hemant Kumar and Vyjayanthimala’s dance accompanying the song “Man Dole Mera Tan Dole”. Then she was casted by Bimal Roy in the superhit movie Devdas opposite Dilip Kumar in 1955. She played the role of Chandramukhi in the movie. Later she starred in four successful movies opposite Dilip Kumar including Madhumati (1958), Ganga Jamuna (1961), Leader (1964) and Naya Daur (1957).
She starred in the movie Amrapali in 1966 which was a historical epic based on the life of the legendary Buddhist courtesan Amrapali. The movie was unable to attract audience to the theatres. She co-starred with many successful actors such as Dev Anand in Jewel Thief, with Rajendra Kumar in Suraj, with Shammi Kapoor in Prince, with Raj Kapoor in Sangam and with Kishore Kumar in the movie New Delhi. She has won many awards such as Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Devdas, Filmfare Best Actress Award for Madhumati (1958), Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Sangam (1964), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. Her Tamil movies included Vanjikottai Valiban, Irumbuthirai, Then Nilavu, Vaazhkai, Penn, Parthiban Kanavu (old) and Baghdad Thirudan.
