Sharukh Khan and Gayatri starrer “Swades” is produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures. It was released on December 17, 2004. Other cast of the movie includes Markand Deshpande, Kishori Ballal, Dayashankar Panday, Rajesh Balwani, Rahul Vohra, Master Smit Seth, Rajesh Vivek, Lekh Tandan. The inspiring music is given by A.R.Rahman and many of the popular songs are sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Baby Pooja, Hariharan Kailash Kher, A.R. Rehman, Madhushree, Vijaj Prakash, Ashutosh Gowarikar and Master Vignesh.

The plot of the story is that a young scientist who come back to his motherland. He looked for his relatives to take them with him but couldn’t resist staying after all. The story begins with scientist Mohan ( Sharukh Khan ) working as project manager at NASA. His longing and affection toward his nanny Kaveri Amma (Kishori Ballal) turns him toward his motherland India. He reaches India and start the pursuit for her, resulting in reaching his village Charanpur. He tries to persuade Kaveriamma to leave with him for US and live there. But she kept him in dilemma and told him to spend some time in the village and will make her decision later. Eventually he meets a beautiful young teacher Gita ( Gayatri ) who is a teacher in the village school trying to save it from ravaging in order to make a panchayat gathering place and he fall in love. He lives there with Kaveri Amma, Gita and Chinku ( Master Smit Seth ) his brother. He tries to adhere but couldn’t with the panchayat.

After all he make Mela Ram ( Dayashankar Panday ) his friend how sees mohan as his foreign ticket for his Dhaba chain in U.S. highways and the post master Nivaran ( Rajesh Vivek ) who help him providing internet facility to communicate with his office in US. Finally he realizes that its social understanding and scientific technology which can motivate people to work for development in a constructive manner. He manages to befriend with BLO and start a project to set up a hydro electric plant to suffice the village. He convinces the panchayat and use local people as labor to work. It worked and eventually he realized that it is his motherland where he will meet his peace with life and refuse to go back and stays with Kaveriamma. Sharukh’s performance is consistently good. Gayatri has also done a noticeable work. Some of the songs were appreciated but that charm was missing and overall the movie was an average.
