The story of the movie Bade Ghar Ki Beti tells the story of a family and the daughters in law who are completely different from each other and how they treat their parents. The movie revolves around the life of Mala ( Meenakshi Seshadri ) who is the only daughter of a Kishanlal ( A K Hangal ), who is a small worker at the house of a rich family. One day the head of the family came across Mala, he was astonished by her beauty and simplicity. He was so impressed by her that he even decided to get his youngest son Gopal ( Rishi Kapoor ) to marry her.

When Kishanlal heard the proposal he immediately agreed for this relation and poor Mala was married into the rich family. She very easily adapted into the family, she helped every member of the family while her stay at their joint family mansion. Both the father in law and mother in law were very happy to see her as their daughter. She had a special place in the minds of the parents because she was completely different from other three daughters in law. One day the father of Gopal passed away and he left the palatial house leaving behind his mother on the mercy of the other three brothers and their wives.
