The movie Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar is a great story that tells how the politics of the country works and also shows the journey of an ordinary man from his ordinary life to politics and how the sudden accuired power can change a man. The movie focuses on the life of an ordinary barber called Ram Avtar ( Rajesh Khanna ), he lived in a small village and used to cut hairs to earn his living. He was married but his wife was no more and he lives with his children and Sushma ( ShabanaAzmi ), his wife’s sister who used to look after his children while he was on work.

Ram Avtar was a cheerful character and everybody liked him. Among all his customers there was a special costumer Minister Digvijay Singh ( Satyen Kappu ), he was very impressed by Ram Avtar’s work and hence he always used to call him for hair dress up. He also knew of his popularity and respect among the villagers. During the elections his party required a strong candidate to fight elections and hence he offered Avtar the choice which he graciously accepted. Result was as accepted he won the elections and became the newest MLA of the village. But this success soon entered his head, he started enjoying the power and his greed towards money increased. He also ignored his children and Sushma.
